CORA BOOK TREK Begins Tuesday, October 27, 2009

The 2-month CORA BOOK SEASON, organized by the Committee For Relevant Art, to mark preparation for the 11th edition of its yearly Lagos Book and Art Festival, LABAF 2009 (November 13-15, 2009) continues on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, with the staging of the 2nd CORA BOOK TREK -- a school outreach project which began in 2006 with Reading Culture campaign in some Nigerian universities.
The 2nd CORA BOOK TREK under the theme: The Quest for The Most Literate Student in Lagos State is designed in three phases with the aim of encouraging students get more actively involved in reading books beyond their textbooks.
The first phase is tagged Meet-The-Author and will hold on TUESDAY OCTOBER 27 at the Alakoto Senior High School, Tolu School Complex, Olodi-Apapa, Lagos; starting at 10am. The students of the school and neighboring schools in the Olodi-Apapa and Festac Town areas will have opportunity to participate in such activities as Reading and Discussing selected creative writing works; Writing Clinic as well as having a one-one with notable writers.
Participation in, and admission to the event is FREE.
The 2nd phase is the Quiz/Book Review session by the students drawn from the first phase; and this will hold on NOVEMBER 3, 2009, at the Bola Ige Memorial Secondary School, Tolu School Complex, Olodi Apapa.
The 3rd phase is an Award Presentation session, and will hold NOVEMBER 13, 2009, where Finalists and Winners will be celebrated on the platform of the 11th Lagos Book and Art Festival, LABAF'09.
The Book Trek is CORA's main School Outreach project aside the Green Festival, which in collaboration with CATE Foundation, holds every year at the LABAF festival events. This edition is coordinated by the poet, school teacher, culture activist, Daggar Tolar, who is currently the Chairman of Lagos chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA. The first edition in 2006 was coordinated by the Popular Culture scholar and culture activist, Ropo Ewenla.
Also at the University of Nsukka, Nsukka, the writer and author of Abbysinian Boy (Dada Books), Onyeka Nwelue will be staging a Book Trek for students of the school, where he is also a student.
The Book Trek is the third in the series opf programmes designed for the 2-month Book Season preparatory to the LABAF'09. The Season had flagged off with the CORA BOOK PARTY, which last month at the Goethe Institut, Lagos, presented eight of the nine poets in the Longlist of the 2009 Nigerian Prize for Literature. The second event was the Conversation on Eros and the African Novel, between Toni Kan, author of (Night of the Creaking Bed) and the Ugandan Doreen Baigana , author of Tropical Fish at the Quintessence in Ikoyi, Lagos. It was in collaboration with Cassava Republic Publishers.
